Overview

Telegram has over 900 million active users in 2026, making it one of the world’s most-used messaging apps. It occupies a unique position: more feature-rich than WhatsApp, more accessible than Signal, and built around a culture of openness and large-group communication that neither competitor offers.

The Privacy Nuance

This is crucial to understand: Telegram’s regular chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted. They’re stored on Telegram’s servers, encrypted but accessible to the company. End-to-end encryption is only available in Secret Chats, which don’t sync across devices. For truly private one-on-one communication, Signal remains superior. Telegram’s strength is in its server-side features, not E2E privacy.

Channels and Groups

Telegram channels support unlimited subscribers and function as broadcast media. Many journalists, independent researchers, and communities use Telegram as a publishing platform. Groups support up to 200,000 members with sophisticated admin tools, polls, and moderation controls.

File Sharing

No other messaging app comes close to Telegram for file sharing. 2GB per file, no compression of photos or videos, permanent cloud storage included. For sharing documents, media, and large files, it’s the best option by far.

Verdict

Telegram in 2026 is excellent for communities, file sharing, and channel-based content. For private E2E messaging, use Signal. For mainstream friends and family, WhatsApp’s ubiquity is hard to beat.

✓ Pros

  • No limits on file size or media sharing
  • Channels support millions of subscribers
  • Bots and automation are powerful
  • Fast, reliable, and open protocol
  • Premium is very affordable

✗ Cons

  • End-to-end encryption is NOT on by default (only Secret Chats)
  • Has been used for misinformation and illegal content distribution
  • Cloud storage means Telegram can read your messages by default
  • Can be overwhelming for non-technical users
