Overview
Temu launched in 2022 and grew explosively to become one of the most downloaded shopping apps in the world. By 2026, it has hundreds of millions of users and a reputation for prices that seem almost impossibly low. We tested it extensively to separate hype from reality.
Prices
The prices are genuinely low. This is the result of direct-from-manufacturer shipping, minimal middlemen, and PDD Holdings’ massive logistics network. You can find items at 20–40% of what they’d cost on Amazon. For simple, non-technical goods — household items, basic clothing, accessories — the value is real.
Quality
This is where Temu gets complicated. Quality is highly variable and entirely product-dependent. Electronics and anything safety-critical should be avoided. For decorative items, simple tools, and fashion accessories, quality is often acceptable for the price. Read reviews carefully and check photos from actual buyers.
Shipping
Standard shipping takes 7–21 days from China to the US or Europe. Express options (3–7 days) are available at higher cost. If you need something quickly, Temu is not the right choice.
Privacy
Temu’s app has been flagged by security researchers for requesting extensive device permissions. The company is subject to Chinese law regarding data. If data privacy is a concern, use the website rather than the app.
Verdict
Temu is genuinely useful for low-stakes purchases where price is the priority. Go in with realistic expectations, research specific products, and don’t install the app if privacy is a concern. It earns a cautious 3.8.
